Two of my grandkids love to help me cook. They are too short to reach the counter, so I have to pick them up and set them on the counter so that they can help. The other night, 2 ½ year old Declan, was helping me feed my dogs. I told him Sadie got one scoop and Raleigh got two. I helped him by scooping the dog food and he poured it into the bowl. Even with my help, the food spilled a little onto the counter. I helped him pick up the pieces and we placed it all in the bowl.
(Don't worry - this picture is cookie day!)
Can you imagine if I didn’t give him any help? If I just let him loose and asked him to feed the dogs? I bet he would fill both bowls full to the brim with dog food, which wouldn’t be good for the dogs at all. He needed side by side guidance. I couldn’t let him just do what he wanted, even though it was a fairly simple task. And when he spilled a little, I helped him pick up the pieces.I started thinking about God. I often want things and don’t understand why He says no. I think about my plans, and ask him for what I want. But oftentimes he says, “No – slow down. We don’t do it that way. We need to do it like this.” If I listen, He quietly guides me in the best way possible.
I need to stop and listen. I need to wait for His guidance. I need to allow Him to help me pick up the pieces when I mess up.
Do you?
Are you trying to do things on your own, or are you relying on God’s quiet strength, wisdom, and guidance?
For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9
Allow God to take over today.
